Virtual iPod is an iPod data backup and restore tool. It allows you to copy all the content from your iPod to your computer and then from your computer to the iPod if you need to restore it. The application uses an ingenious way to let you backup your iPod devices. It creates "virtual iPods" which behave like ISO images. When you create a virtual iPod, you will be able to put songs and videos in it from within this application. You can create as many virtual iPods as you want, and you can send different content to each one of those.
To backup your songs and movies, you first have to select them and click on the blue arrow to send them to your virtual iPod. There isn't a mode to backup the entire device, but you can use a keyboard shortcut to select all songs and then send them to the virtual iPod.
Virtual iPod detected my iPod 5G instantly and without any problems. Since I had iTunes installed, I can't say whether or not it is needed for Virtual iPod to detect your device.
The functionality offered by this application and others from The Boys Downunder have now been combined into a new application called iPod 2 iPod. You can purchase it for $39.95.
